JASPER JOHNS BIBLIOGRAPHY

Exhibition History

This exhibition history is divided into two sections: one-man and group exhibitions. For both sections, exhibitions are listed in chronological order by opening date. Exhibitions for which dates are not known are listed in alphabetical order at the beginning of each year. (To locate all entries for a given year, search for that year's numerical date followed by an asterisk–for example, 1958*.)

When an exhibition traveled, the venues it went to are listed directly after the entry for its first showing, rather than falling later in the exhibition history. Exhibition names are given in the original language. If a name was translated or changed when an exhibition traveled, alternate names are given with the venue information.

Organizing institutions are noted if they do not correspond to the exhibiting institution or the location of the first showing of a traveling exhibition. The names of curators or organizers are noted when known.

When a publication is known to have accompanied an exhibition, it is indicated at the end of the entry (catalogue, brochure, foldout, etc.). Complete references for these entries can be found under "Exhibition Catalogues" in this document’s accompanying bibliography. If separate publications were issued by venues of an exhibition, either with differing contents or in translation, they are noted with venue information. Exhibition information is enclosed in square brackets [ ] when not founded on firm documentation or is unverified.

Brackets are not used to indicated translated titles as in the Bibliography.
